Sedation Dentistry Q & A

What are the benefits of sedation dentistry?

Whether you generally experience anxiety around dental visits or fear the pain associated with a specific procedure, sedation dentistry can help put you at ease. Depending on the level of sedation, you may experience the following:

  • Decreased fear or anxiety
  • No memory of your dental procedure
  • Minimized sense of sound or smell
  • No sense of length of time of the procedure
  • Decreased pain during procedure

What is “laughing gas”?

Dr. Lee can offer you laughing gas, or nitrous oxide, to ease mild to moderate anxiety. Nitrous oxide helps you relax and wears off quickly, so you can resume your normal activities immediately after the procedure.

Are there stronger types of sedation available?

If you’re having a surgical procedure, like a root canal or implant, you may prefer a stronger type of sedation. Dr. Lee offers several levels of sedation ranging from mild to deep, and these can be administered orally or intravenously. If you opt for oral sedation, Dr. Lee will write you a prescription for a sedative pill, which you’ll need to take one hour before your appointment. You’ll need to have a friend or family member drive you to and from your appointment, as the sedative will make you feel drowsy and fully relaxed by the time you arrive at the office.

If you and Dr. Lee decide you need intravenous (IV) sedation for strong anxiety or a complex procedure, you can opt conscious sedation. With light sedation, you will remain conscious but very relaxed throughout your procedure. With deep sedation, you’ll either be nearly or completely unconscious while in the dentist’s chair. For both light and deep IV sedation, you’ll need a friend or family member to drive you to and from your appointment while you recover from the sedation.
