Dental Implants Q & A

What are dental implants?

Dental implants are titanium posts or frames that are surgically implanted into your jawbone beneath the gums. These posts provide a stable base for mounting replacement teeth, whether in the form of a denture, bridge or crown. When artificial teeth are installed on top of an implant, they won’t slip or shift, as can be the case without types of false teeth.

What does getting a dental implant entail?

Dr. Lee seeks to make the dental implant process as comfortable as possible. During your first appointment, he surgically implants a titanium post for each artificial tooth. These are then fitted with temporary crowns while the posts heal and your custom crowns are fabricated.

The tissue and bone surrounding the post require a few weeks to fuses naturally with the patient’s jaw bone. During this time, Dr. Lee creates your new artificial teeth, based on detailed images and impressions. Your prosthetic teeth will be perfectly color matched and contoured by match your natural teeth.

At your next appointment, Dr. Lee installs your artificial teeth and checks that they line up perfectly.

Is it painful to get an implant?

Dr. Lee takes great care to make the surgery as comfortable and painless as possible. He thoroughly numbs the treatment area with local anesthesia. He also offers sedation with nitrous oxide -- also known as “laughing gas.” If needed, Dr. Lee also offers mild, moderate, and deep levels of sedation dentistry. Many patients who choose sedation find they don’t have any memory of the procedure. If you’d like to explore this option, Dr. Lee is happy to help you determine what’s right for you.

How does a mini implant differ from a traditional implant?

Mini implants are smaller and therefore require less space on the bone for implantation. As miniature titanium “roots” for false teeth, they’re designed to anchor removable dentures, rather than permanent crowns or bridges. With mini implants, the implantation procedure is a bit simpler and shorter than traditional implants. Mini implants can often support a denture right away, and your recovery time should only be one or two days.
